Wedding Florist Manhattan

Tribeca, SoHo, Chelsea, the Flatiron and the Financial District run on rooms that arrive as blank white boxes: high ceilings, big windows, wide floors and nothing else. That is why couples book them, and it is why they cost more to design than a ballroom does. Height is the first decision. Under a sixteen-foot ceiling a low centerpiece disappears and the eye has nowhere to travel, so the budget goes into tall pieces and hanging installations rather than more arrangements at table level. Light is the second. A loft has beautiful daylight and almost nothing after dark, so candles at three heights and warm uplighting are structural rather than decorative. Our own Rockefeller Center reception was exactly this: ceiling draping to soften the room, gold candelabras on the tables, tall floral clouds on pedestals to fill the vertical space.

Midtown and the Upper East Side hold the opposite problem. Those rooms are already decorated, and heavily: gilt, moulding, patterned carpet, chandeliers that were expensive a century ago. Bring a loft's worth of flowers into one and it reads as clutter rather than abundance. So the work is restraint and contrast. A tighter palette, often ivory and green and gold, so the flowers sit against the room instead of arguing with it. Mixed heights across the tables so the space reads full from the doors without crowding the architecture. And pin spots, because a ballroom chandelier on a dinner dimmer flattens texture and a small focused light from above puts it back. Ask the hotel what its house lights actually are before choosing a single stem.

We have installed at St. Patrick's Cathedral, and the lesson there applies across Manhattan's landmarked churches. These rooms were built to make a person feel small, and they do the same to flowers. An arrangement that would dominate a ballroom disappears on the steps of a cathedral. Altar pieces run four feet and full of mass, in white and green, because dark stone and coloured glass swallow pastels. Pew markers go on ribbon, every third or fourth row, because nothing is taped to anything. Many parishes keep the altar flowers for the weekend, so a church-and-reception wedding is two separate designs with one bouquet carrying the palette between them, and the bouquet travels in water between the two.

This is the part other florists leave off their websites, and it is the part that decides whether a wedding runs on time. Most venues have no loading dock. Where there is one, it is a fixed window, often ninety minutes. There is nowhere to park, and a truck on a Midtown street is a ticket. Freight elevator dimensions decide what can be built off-site, so an arch that will not fit gets assembled in the room instead. Landmarked interiors mean nothing attaches to walls, floors or columns, so every structure is freestanding and weighted. And install windows are short: a suburban club gives us the room at noon, a Manhattan loft often gives us two hours and needs us out before guests arrive. We plan the build around that, not the other way round.
