Queens does scale better than any borough. The halls through Astoria, Whitestone, Bayside, Howard Beach and Jamaica Estates were built for three hundred, four hundred, sometimes six hundred guests, and a room that size punishes small ideas. Mass reads first. Whatever guests see when the doors open has to hold from the back wall, so roughly a third of the tables go tall, and the budget concentrates along the path from the entrance to the dance floor where every wide photograph gets taken. Spread a medium budget evenly across forty tables and you get forty thin tables. Light matters as much as flowers: most of these rooms have no windows, so ceiling draping, amber uplighting and pin spots on each centerpiece do work that no extra stems can. One chart for four hundred names is a queue; two charts or an escort card wall moves people into dinner.

The rooms along the water in Long Island City and Astoria were booked for the view, and the view is Manhattan. Nothing we build competes with that, so we stay out of its way. Ceremony pieces go grounded and low, or off to the sides, leaving the horizon open. An arch set against that skyline turns two people into silhouettes. There's wind off the East River most evenings and considerably more of it on a terrace or a rooftop, so structures are weighted and built open enough to let the breeze pass through, and every candle outdoors sits in a hurricane. The light turns gold for about twenty minutes and then goes blue and cold, which is why the palette runs warm and the candles are lit before it happens rather than after.

Queens hosts some of the largest cultural celebrations in the country, through Jackson Heights, Richmond Hill, Floral Park, Flushing and Astoria, and they come with real structure rather than just décor. A mandap and a chuppah aren't decorated the way an arch is. The pillars and the front edge carry every photograph; the inside of the canopy is beautiful, expensive, and barely appears in a frame, so we'll tell you where the marigolds and the garlands actually earn their money before you commit. Fabric goes on before flowers. Everything is built to be carried, because these ceremonies move. Where a family's celebration runs across several days and more than one venue, one palette and one crew across all of it is the difference between a weekend that holds together and four separate parties.

East and north of the halls, Queens gets leafy. Tudor courtyards and garden ceremonies in Forest Hills. Clubs along Little Neck Bay in Bayside and Douglaston, where the water is on one side and a fairway on the other. Restaurants in Astoria and Ditmars running weddings of fifty. These are smaller and closer, and nothing hides at close range. Fewer stems, better stems, and a long table with a runner under ten inches so people can talk across it. Outdoor ceremonies here need the same discipline as the waterfront: weighted bases, nothing staked into stone, and a plan for the hour the sun actually sits at rather than the hour on the invitation. The load-in is easier than Manhattan, which means more of the budget goes into the room and less into logistics.
