Brooklyn's wedding rooms are mostly buildings that used to make things. Converted warehouses and factory floors through DUMBO, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Gowanus and Red Hook: exposed brick, concrete floors, steel windows, ceilings at fifteen or twenty feet. They photograph well and they arrive empty. No chandeliers, no carpet, no palette of their own, and often no soft light at all once the sun is down. That makes them full-design rooms. Height is the first decision, because a low centerpiece disappears under a twenty-foot ceiling and the eye has nowhere to go. Hanging installations and tall floral pieces do the work a ballroom's architecture would otherwise do. Warmth is the second. Raw industrial rooms turn cold and grey after dark, so candles at three heights and amber uplighting keep the space from reading as a garage with tables in it.

The rooms along the East River in DUMBO, Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Red Hook were booked for one reason, and it sits on the other side of the water. Manhattan behind a couple at sunset is a backdrop nothing we build can compete with, so we don't try to. Ceremony pieces go grounded and low, or off to the sides, leaving the horizon open. An arch set against that view turns two people into silhouettes. There is wind off the river most evenings and more of it on a rooftop, so every structure is weighted and built open enough to let the breeze pass through, and every candle outdoors sits in a hurricane. The light goes warm for about twenty minutes and then turns blue and cold, which is why the palette runs warm and the candles are lit before it happens.

Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill run smaller. A garden behind a brownstone seating forty. A restaurant's back room. A stone church built to make a room feel taller than it is. Nothing hides at that range. Fewer stems, better stems, and a long table dressed with a runner under ten inches so people can talk across it. The churches come with the rules old churches come with: nothing taped to pews, no open flame, altar flowers that may stay with the parish. The real constraint is the street. Narrow blocks, alternate-side parking, no loading dock and no driveway, so pieces are carried in by hand and built in place rather than delivered whole.

Brooklyn has one of the largest Orthodox Jewish wedding communities in the country, through Borough Park, Williamsburg, Crown Heights and Flatbush, and we work it. The chuppah is the centre of the design, not an accessory. We build and rent the frames: fabric first, florals on the posts and the front edge where the photographs happen, and everything built to be carried and struck the same night. The kallah's chair and the florals around it come before it, and they are photographed closely, so they get the best stems in the order. Guest counts run far past a typical wedding, in halls built for exactly that scale, and separate seating means the room has to read from two sides rather than one. At that size the rule is mass first, detail second, with the centerpiece budget concentrated where the cameras are.
