What Westchester Venues Have in Common

Westchester is a small county with five very different kinds of wedding room, and after a few hundred Saturdays here the pattern is easy to name. On the Sound, in Rye and Larchmont, the rooms are yacht clubs and shore clubs with a lawn, a view and wind that never stops. Design has to be built for weather: weighted ceremony pieces, low or heavy-based centerpieces near open doors, and greenery that reads against water and grey shingle rather than fighting it.

Above the river, in Ardsley, Yonkers and the towns on the parkway, weddings happen in old estates, mansion terraces and banquet halls with a Hudson view through the windows. The view does half the work at six o'clock and none of it at nine, so those rooms live on candlelight, amber uplighting and pin spots that keep the tables alive after the sun has gone.

North, in Armonk and Chappaqua, it's horse country: private clubs, historic inns and tents on estate lawns. A tent is the most opinionated room in the county. There are no walls to hang anything on, the center poles want wrapping rather than ignoring, the seating chart has to stand on its own legs, and by nine the bistro lights and candles are the entire lighting plan.

In White Plains the rooms are hotel ballrooms and downtown restaurants: drop ceilings, flat house light and three hundred guests who all arrive at once. Those weddings need mass first and detail second — something readable from the back wall when the doors open, draping to fix the ceiling, and an escort card wall instead of one chart so twenty people can read at the same time.

And in the villages — Bronxville, Scarsdale and the parishes around them — the ceremony is usually a tall stone church or a temple with its own written rules. Freestanding chuppahs, altar pieces built with enough mass to read from the last pew, pew markers on ribbon and nothing taped to anything. In many parishes the altar flowers stay for Sunday, which makes a village wedding two designs joined by one bouquet.
