Garfield, Paramus and Hasbrouck Heights, and the halls strung along Route 17 and Route 4, hold the biggest wedding rooms in the county. They are built for three and four hundred guests and they are usually windowless. Mass reads first in a room that size. At The Venetian in Garfield we built a double floral arch over the sweetheart table and ran a cascading garland down the grand staircase, which is exactly how a big windowless room earns its photographs.

Golf-course ballrooms with terraces and a lawn, and private estates with the kind of grass a tent was invented for. A tent looks like a blank canvas and it is the most opinionated room you will ever decorate. There are no walls, so the seating chart stands on its own legs and the welcome pieces have to be freestanding too. Centre poles land where the dance floor wants to be, so we wrap them rather than pretend they are not there. Bases are weighted, because nothing stakes into a stone patio. By nine the bistro lights and the candles are the whole lighting plan, and lanterns carry the walk from the house down to the tent.

Teaneck, Englewood, Bergenfield, Fair Lawn and New Milford hold some of the largest Modern Orthodox communities in the country, and we work them most of the year. The chuppah is the centre of the design, not an accessory. We build and rent the frames: fabric first, then florals on the posts and along the front edge where the photographs happen, and the whole structure is built to be carried in and struck the same night. The kallah's chair and its florals come before the ceremony and are photographed closely, so they take the best stems in the order. Guest counts run past a typical wedding, and separate seating means the room has to read from two sides rather than one. That changes where height goes and where the candles sit.

The view is the backdrop, so ceremony pieces stay grounded and low and leave the horizon open. Anything tall in the middle turns two people into silhouettes. Wind on the cliffs is real and it comes up in the late afternoon, so structures are weighted, built open enough for the air to pass through, and every outdoor candle sits inside a hurricane. The light goes gold for about twenty minutes and then turns blue and cold. That is why the palette runs warm on these sites and the candles are lit before the change rather than after it.
