Lighting Designers Who Plan the Room at Nine O'Clock
Light first, flowers second
Most couples plan lighting last, after the flowers, the linens and the rentals, and then wonder why the photos from dinner look nothing like the photos from cocktail hour. Light is what the flowers are seen in, so we decide it first, or at least at the same meeting. Five questions for the venue: what the house lights are, tungsten or LED, and whether they dim; what the ceremony spot looks like at the ceremony hour; what the candle policy is; who controls the uplighting; and whether the DJ washes the whole room in color at nine. Five answers, and the flower list gets shorter and better.
Fabric changes a room more than anything else you can rent
A drop ceiling in a ballroom in White Plains disappears behind pearl draping. A bright, plain wall behind the sweetheart table becomes a backdrop with one panel of sheer and a candle wall in front of it. A tent up in Armonk turns into a room with sidewalls down and bistro lights up. Draping is the biggest visual change per dollar in the whole décor budget, and because the florals attach to it, at the top of the backdrop or along the front edge of the canopy, it has to be designed with the flowers, not delivered separately by someone who's never seen them.
Tents, ballrooms and old houses each need a different plan
Ballrooms need amber uplights on the walls and pin spots on the tables, because house light at dinner level makes texture vanish. Tents get dark fast and run entirely on bistro lights and candles by nine, so candles stop being a mood and start being the lighting plan. Churches and the historic houses in Chappaqua and along the river usually forbid open flame, so it's warm LED in real quantity, inside frosted glass, clustered rather than scattered, plus lanterns down the hall. The candles, candelabras and lanterns come through our wedding décor rentals, the tables they light come from our wedding reception décor, and hanging pieces that need their own light come from our floral installations and flower walls crew.

Questions About Wedding Draping & Lighting in Westchester
Do you coordinate with our DJ's lighting?
Yes, in writing before the wedding. We ask for the room to stay amber or warm white and for color to stay on the dance floor. Most DJs are glad to; nobody had asked.
Can you drape a tent?
Yes, ceilings, poles and sidewalls, with bistro lights strung overhead, subject to the tent company's sign-off.
Our venue doesn't allow open flame. What are the options?
Warm LED tapers and pillars in frosted glass, clustered so the light layers, plus lanterns and uplighting. Done right, guests don't notice.
Is lighting included with the flowers or quoted separately?
Quoted as its own section of the same proposal, so you can see it plainly and add or remove it without touching the flowers.
