Wedding Flowers Designed for the Hands That Hold Them
The dress decides the bouquet
We ask for a photo of the dress before we ask a single question about flowers. A full skirt takes a bigger bouquet. A slip dress wants something spare. A gown with lace and beading and a bow at the back needs a quiet bouquet or the two of them fight in every picture, and a very plain dress can carry something wild. Then we look at the person: how tall, how they stand, whether they're the kind of nervous that grips. For size, we hold our hands out about the width of the bride's hips and treat that as the ceiling. For weight, under two pounds, because a June bouquet stuffed with peonies can hit three and your wrist starts to mention it during the second reading.
Which flowers survive six hours out of water
Not all of them, and this is where a wedding florist earns the fee. Garden roses hold if they were conditioned properly. Ranunculus, lisianthus, orchids and spray roses hold. Dahlias hold but bruise, so they sit in the middle where nothing touches them. Hydrangea wilts in an hour unless it's wrapped wet. Sweet peas give you an afternoon. Lily of the valley gets its own water tube and a spare stem in the cooler for the dinner photos. So every bouquet is built in two stages: the sturdy flowers the night before, the fragile ones tucked in twenty minutes before it leaves the studio.

It should look like it was pulled straight out of a centerpiece from our wedding reception décor and handed to someone, and the boutonnieres should look like they fell off the arch from our wedding ceremony décor.
