Scarsdale has more golf-course ballrooms per square mile than almost anywhere in the county: Fenway, Quaker Ridge, Sunningdale, and the Scarsdale Golf Club just over the line in Hartsdale. They share a shape. A big carpeted room with a terrace for cocktail hour, a long walk from the porte-cochère to the ballroom, and windows that look out on a fairway going gold at six. So the design is ballroom-scale: mixed-height centerpieces so the room reads full from the door, a seating chart placed on the terrace side where the crowd actually gathers, pin spots on the tables because club chandeliers dim flat, and an arch on the lawn built for wind, since fairways have nothing to stop it.

A good share of Scarsdale ceremonies happen at Westchester Reform Temple, Scarsdale Synagogue, Hitchcock Presbyterian or the Congregational church on the hill, and each has its own list. Chuppahs usually have to be freestanding and portable. Some sanctuaries ask that the altar flowers remain for the weekend. Most forbid open flame and anything attached to the pews. The lawns in Greenacres, Heathcote and Fox Meadow were made for tents, and a tent is the most opinionated room you'll ever decorate. No walls, so the seating chart stands on its own legs. Center poles, so they get wrapped in greenery rather than ignored. Heat in August, so the flower list goes sturdier and the centerpieces stay in the truck until the last minute. A neighbor's fence in every photo, so a garland fixes that. We plan the ceremony under the biggest tree, cocktail hour on the patio, and the tent for dinner and dancing, with bistro lights and candles doing all the work by nine.
